Old Images : Our Apologies

Posted on December 30, 2007

We are migrating to a new photo sharing website. Old images may appear in our feeds but unfortunately there is not much we can do about it. We assure you this is only a temporary problem and will be fixed within the next day or two.

Wordpress 2.3

Posted on October 24, 2007

Wordpress LogoWordpress 2.3 has been out for a while but I’ve been hesitant to upgrade. I finally decided it was time. RandyAldrich.net was running on 2.1.2 until now and I thought the upgrade might not go as smoothly as it should. As with any upgrade I did a database backup and instead of overwriting the install directory I created a new one (randyaldrich.upgrade). Once I was satisfied that I had all configuration, plugins, themes and uploads transferred to the new directory I simply deactivated all my plugins, switched the directory names and ran the upgrade script. It went perfectly smooth. So smooth that I also upgraded R & R today.

Along with the upgrade I always do some general house cleaning. Remove any plugins no longer used, upgrade any plugins which have upgrades available. I like to embed videos with my posts now and then and wordpress does not make this easy. Because of this I have been using Viper’s Video Quicktags for quite some time now and recently realized I was 2 versions behind. The new versions provide some nice enhancements and fixes to issues I have been noticing.

All in all. A good upgrade. I highly recommend it.

Achtung!

Posted on August 16, 2007

It has come to my attention that many people who watch this blog may not realize that I maintain another (more technical) blog. I don’t expect it to be interesting to everyone (or anyone really), I would just like to let everyone know that it exists.

My Blog

We are Media

Posted on August 1, 2007

Today’s Media sources are truly impressive. The pure amount of information available and the ways in which to get it are just astounding. After struggling for a long time I started with a blog. That helped, then I discovered Google Reader and that helped a little more. I then installed a wiki which only I have access to. That helped me manage my ideas and organize thoughts and helped a lot.

But today… today my good friend Tim let me in on a little secret. Google Reader’s shared items. I’ve always seen the feature sitting there and not really paid much attention to it. I noticed he had added his Google Reader’s shared items application to his facebook profile.

Suddenly, Like Robert Scoble, I am Media. I share lots of things I find all over the internet via lots of different tools. instant messages (or should i say Pidgin?) E-mail, In-person (gasp!), and our Blog. Recently I’ve been struggling with how to share these things efficiently. For a while I posted a lot of videos on our Blog. I don’t like this. The blog is supposed to be our thoughts and how people can keep up on what we’re doing. It had become a place to keep up on what we’re reading/watching. I didn’t want to use my site because that’s intended to be more of a professional atmosphere where I share projects, ideas and thoughts I have dealing strictly with the software industry (or wherever I end up).

Well now I’ve found my mechanism. If you are interested my shared items can be found here. There’s even a feed for those of you who like that idea. Also it’s now displayed on our website in a sidebar widget.

Wordpress 2.2

Posted on May 18, 2007

I’ve taken the plunge.  For one its speedy.  Secondly it includes the widgets plugin which is nice (although I was already using it).  The biggest difference I can see is the speed improvement.  However this was the first opportunity I had to test my new dev server procedure.  I’ve had Wordpress 2.2 on http://dev.randyandrachel.com since about 5 minutes after it was released.  I’ve played around a little bit, made sure all the plugins I want to use still work.  After I was sure I had a database backup of the current install (via the daily scheduled backups now) I decided it was time to take the plunge.  Probably the easiest upgrade thus far.
